What is Shannen Doherty famous for

What happened to Shannen Doherty?

The series characters Brenda Walsh and Dylan McKay were the absolute dream couple from "Beverly Hills, 90210" for an entire generation of teenagers in the 1990s. "I love all my brothers and sisters from 90210, who have become like family to me," wrote Doherty on Instagram on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the series premiere in the fall.

Doherty turns 50 on Monday (April 12th) - but her life has taken a sad turn. In 2015, the actress announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she has been fighting the disease - explicitly in public, to encourage other people affected. She publishes pictures of her shaved head, as well as regular updates on how she is doing in the fight against the disease.

"A bitter pill"

Her colleagues are publicly available to Doherty. The former Beverly Hills, 90210 crew had to cope with the early death of co-star Perry in 2019, who died after a stroke at the age of only 52. In 2019 the actress was able to participate in a new edition of the series, together with many of her colleagues from back then. But in early 2020, the actress announced that cancer was back. "It's a bitter pill to swallow in many ways."

Start in "Our Little Farm"

Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA in 1971. Her mother owned a beauty salon and her father worked in finance. Doherty became interested in acting at an early age and soon got his first small roles, including in the series "Our Little Farm". In 1990 she made her breakthrough as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210.

"I had a lot of resentment in me"

With the fame came the problems

But with fame came problems. There have been reports of recurring arguments on the set. According to media reports, Doherty did not seem to get along with her colleagues at all at the time. "The more stories were written about me, the more defensive and withdrawn I became," the actress told Elle magazine recently. "And the bigger the walls I built around myself became. I had a lot of grudges inside of me." But the reports weren't entirely wrong either, admits Doherty. "At 19, diplomacy is not something you understand anything about."

She also left "Charmed" in an argument

She left the series in 1994, and according to reports, she was personally fired by producer Aaron Spelling. She also left her next leading role in the series "Charmed" after only a few years in an argument. After that, only minor roles and guest appearances followed.

"I still have a lot of life in me."

Doherty now lives in Malibu with her third husband, producer Kurt Iswarienko. Iswarienko is always by her side in the fight against cancer. Of course she thinks about death, but she is not ready for it, Doherty said in a recent "Elle" interview. "I still have a lot of life in me."
