What is a dirty sailor

Ian Collins was in Brandon Semenuk's inner circle for years, shooting stills for some of the slopestyle star's most iconic projects, but Collins still thinks Semenuk is a mystery.

Semenuk is known for his planning by breaking down each course based on features, tricks, or ticks on the clock. But he keeps most of his thoughts in his head or writes them down in his ubiquitous black notebook.

Collins sometimes doesn't know the full extent of Semenuk's mental mastery until they've been in one place for days, as was the case when Semenuk's fourth Raw 100 was built and shot down in Northern California that spring.

"We have to pry it out sometimes ... and sometimes when we have to pull it out of him it's like," Oh god, this is going to be gnarly, "says Collins." He knows everything he wants to do and he thinks in seconds. "

On the first day of shooting, as they were exploring the 500-acre private property that would later become Semenuk's dirt sails, Collins noticed that Semenuk's hip camera and notebook were on the car's dashboard as they drove down a dirt road. The notebook described exactly how he wanted to spend the individual 100 seconds of processing. It was a complete revelation of how he works as an artist, hardworking worker, and most progressive rider in the world.

"I always knew he thought that way, but seeing this material artifact was proof of that."
