Professional wikis for corporate use

Wiki tools for professionals

For companies, the potential of wikis is particularly interesting because of their low costs and high flexibility. As open source software, wiki tools are usually available for free, and in most cases the required web server is already in place. In addition, there is a large number of wiki implementations in different programming languages, from which you can select the appropriate one and, if necessary, adapt it to the individual needs of the company.

There is certainly no shortage of software tools for setting up wikis. WikiWikiWeb, the forefather of all wiki systems by Ward Cunningham, has grown into dozens of other wiki engines for different application contexts and system environments. The most popular tools that are suitable for professional use are currently the software MediaWiki, Twiki used by Wikipedia and the wiki implementation MoinMoin written in Python.

Twiki, one of the first tools, was developed, for example, for maintaining a support database and is characterized by good processing of structured data and a configurable search. DokuWiki is a lightweight that focuses on the essentials. ProWiki and MediaWiki are particularly suitable for intranets.

MediaWiki, the basis of Wikipedia, shows its strength when it comes to structuring and maintaining large document collections. It offers a large number of additional functions that make it possible, among other things, to clearly organize the pages, assign categories and insert templates. In addition, MediaWiki is characterized by import options for various data formats and LDAP integration.

Which features the individual wiki systems offer and which target group they are aimed at can be found in the table "Open Source Wiki Systems".
