Pioneering project in India
Infosys relies on REHAU's concrete core temperature control system

India is the seventh largest country in the world and nine times larger than Germany. Its population is over 1.2 billion and is growing by an additional 18 million every year. Alongside China, the country is one of the economic climbers in recent years. And topics such as green building or sustainable water management have long since arrived there.

REHAU has been active in India for several years. For example, the company has developed a concept for efficient heating and cooling in the tropics / subtropics and, thanks to this know-how, has managed to equip the Infosys IT Park in Hyderabad with concrete core temperature control. In the final stage, more than 30,000 employees will work there in more than 200,000 square meters of cooled office space. Not only does comfort play a major role, but more than 200 tons of CO2 are saved annually and the burden on the environment is sustainable.

The pioneer of the Indian IT industry is growing
Infosys is a pioneer in the Indian IT industry. Since it started in a small living room in Pune in the early 1980s, the group has grown to around 130,000 employees. His customers include Apple and Microsoft, for example. While the activities of the IT service provider have so far mainly extended to North America, it is now focusing more on Europe as well. This growth strategy requires high investments and the hiring of around 30,000 new employees.

In order to be able to accommodate these many employees spatially, new work areas have to be created. In this context, sophisticated building technology concepts for cooling play an important role against the background of the hot climate. On the one hand, the consumption-related costs for electrical energy for cooling purposes should be kept low. On the other hand, the aim is to achieve as much independence as possible from the unstable power grid in India, which is known for its frequent power outages.

Hyderabad location as a model project
An efficient solution to these challenges is the use of concrete core temperature control. REHAU, a specialist in this field for decades, was able to implement this technology on the new IT campus in Hyderabad thanks to its extensive experience in close cooperation with Infosys. The special feature: While the REHAU systems in combination with a small supporting air conditioning system provide air conditioning in one part of the building, the other, structurally identical part of the symmetrically designed building is cooled using a conventional full air conditioning system. The aim of this model project, which is unique in India, is to directly compare the energy consumption and thermal comfort of the competing systems with one another in an ongoing comparison.

Comprehensive on-site support
A total of 70,000 meters of the RAUTHERM S pipe made of PE-Xa were integrated into the solid concrete ceilings. For this purpose, prefabricated CCT modules were produced on site under the professional guidance of REHAU. This enabled the ambitious construction times to be adhered to. The pipelines were connected with the permanently tight and easy-to-install sliding sleeve connection technology. Finally, the individual cooling circuits were connected to REHAU heating circuit distributors with flow meters.

System specialist REHAU provided extensive on-site support in order to successfully use concrete core temperature control, which is still relatively unknown in India. In addition to comprehensive installation planning, the main focus was on the supervision and guidance of the structural implementation. During the concreting work, a REHAU employee was always on the construction site to be available for questions and to be able to intervene in demanding situations. But REHAU was also on hand to provide scientific support in cooperation with the Technical University of Braunschweig.

Convincing results
The comparative performance of the two competing systems was independently assessed by the Technical University of Braunschweig. It was shown that the use of REHAU concrete core temperature control reduced the annual energy consumption by 35 percent compared to a full air conditioning system. This arithmetically results in savings of around 21,000 euros per year. In terms of thermal comfort, the concrete core temperature control also scored points: the employees working there found the room air temperatures to be cooler - although in fact 2 ° Celsius higher - than when using the full air conditioning system. This typical effect can be attributed to the fact that the surface of the human body is in a radiation exchange with the large-area, cool surfaces of the building structure. In addition, annoying side effects such as drafts or loud noises are excluded.

Proud of this pioneering achievement, Infosys is very proactive with the building technology concept using REHAU concrete core temperature control. In addition to the presentation at trade fairs, the results of the measurement are to be made available via the Internet in order to encourage other groups and companies in India to use this technology. In any case, Infosys has already decided to rely on efficient technology from REHAU again for further construction phases in Hyderabad and Pune.
