Kurt Cobain shot himself with a shotgun on April 5, 1994 after a heroin overdose. Nirvana interrupted their in-utero tour in early March 1994 due to Cobain's persistent stomach pain, the cause of which various doctors have not been able to accurately diagnose since childhood. Heroin thus developed more and more into a pain reliever for the Nirvana front man.

Cobain flew to Rome with his wife Courtney Love, where he was hospitalized two days later in a coma. He had mixed large amounts of tranquilizers with alcohol, which the doctors rated as a suicide attempt. It was all just a mistake, so the later statement.

The inner circle subsequently pushed Cobain to undergo drug withdrawal. He moved into the Exodus Recovery Center in Marina del Rey, California, but fled on April 1, 1994, being careful not to be found. Courtney Love put up a missing person report, but it was unsuccessful.


An electrician found the biggest rock star of the 1990s in a greenhouse above his garage. This garage was demolished a few years ago. Next to Cobain was the suicide note with the famous words: "It's better to burn out than to fade away". Better to burn out than fade away. Kurt Cobain quoted Neil Young from his song"Hey Hey, My My (Out Of The Blue)".

The letter was addressed to Cobain's imaginary friend Boddha. Depending on the point of view, Boddah is also assigned the function of the evil alter ego on the basis of Cobain's own descriptions. As an adolescent, he was once accused of torturing a cat, which he then blamed on Boddah.


Kurt Cobain was cremated on April 14, 1994. Courtney Love scattered pieces of his ashes in a Buddhist temple in New York and in the Wishkah River in Washington state. They also buried part of it under a tree on their last shared property. In 2008, most of the ashes were stolen from her villa's closet by strangers.
