All figures and graphics about the coronavirus

How is the coronavirus spreading in Germany? How worldwide? How many people are in the intensive care unit? All the numbers on the pandemic in interactive maps and graphics.

In Germany, more than three million infections with the corona virus have now been confirmed. Worldwide there are even more than 150 million.

The following overview shows the nine countries with the most known infections with the coronavirus as well as the current figures from Germany.

The trend shows how the infection rate is developing in the individual countries by comparing the number of new infections with those of the previous week. All data in this overview is continuously updated automatically.

How the number of New infections has developed since the beginning of the corona pandemic in Germany, this graphic shows with figures from Risklayer. It is based on average values from the past seven days:

The following graphic also shows what percentage of the Corona tests were positive in Germany. The latest data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) depicts the infection and test events from the previous week. The data is updated on Wednesdays.

An equally important indication of the status of the pandemic is the number of Deaths in connection with Covid-19. The following graphic shows the average number of deaths over the past seven days:

How many people die also largely depends on how the virus spreads in risk groups, such as the elderly. The following graphic, updated every Tuesday, shows how many confirmed corona cases there are per 100,000 inhabitants in the various Age groups has given. How severely the respective group is affected, however, also depends on the test strategy, for example in nursing and old people's homes.

You can now see how high the incidence is in your region in the following map:

Corona emergency brake - Where the corona emergency brake is released

Whether corona measures are relaxed or tightened also depends on the so-called 7-day incidence. Our map shows whether the upper limits are being adhered to in your region.

Which corona mutants are there in Germany?

In Germany, the British virus variant B.1.1.7 in particular now determines the infection process. A mutant that is more likely to spread and possibly more deadly.

The Robert Koch Institute refers to such mutants as "Variants of Concern". Every two weeks the RKI publishes a report that describes how widespread the variants are in Germany. The percentage shows how high their proportion is in all the samples examined:

Another indicator of the development of the infection rate is the number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care:

The number of intensive care beds is limited. With many new serious Covid 19 cases, the health system can therefore reach its limits. The following map shows how many intensive care places are occupied in total - with Covid-19 patients and other intensive care patients:

One hundred percent utilization in a region means not necessarilythat severe Covid 19 cases can no longer be treated there and patients have to travel long distances.

Some clinics can New intensive care beds at short notice and thus expand their capacities if necessary. At the same time, not every intensive care bed reported as available is actually ready for use. Because there is a lack of staff. In addition, not every bed is suitable for the ventilation of particularly severe Covid-19 cases.

How the hospitals assess the capacity of intensive care beds with ventilation option in their house is reported daily with a traffic light system. A distinction is made between three types of intensive care beds:

  • Low care: Simple intensive care unit, ventilation through face mask, patient breathes independently
  • High care: Intensive care unit with stronger supply, ventilation through a tube in the windpipe, the machine takes over breathing
  • ECMO: Highest level of supply, blood is supplied with oxygen by a machine outside the body

Using the name of the clinic, the town or the street, you can use the search function in the following table to find out about the situation in the clinics in your area:

How does Germany compare internationally? The graphic below shows how many New infections selected countries have confirmed on average in the past week. The data were related to the population of the countries in order to make them comparable (7-day incidence).

How the confirmed new infections of the past seven days affect the World regions can be seen in the following graphic:

How many Deaths it per million people worldwide in the various countries is shown in the following table:

Why are there different numbers of cases for the coronavirus?

ZDFheute uses different data sources for the number of cases related to the coronavirus. Risklayer provides the latest figures for Germany. Together with employees of the Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the company collects data several times a day from publications by the health authorities of the districts and cities.

They receive reports of new corona infections directly from doctors and laboratories. The offices then send the data to the health authorities of the federal states. Only then do they end up at the RKI, which in turn sends them to the World Health Organization. Therefore the numbers in the different sources may vary.

The figures for known corona infections in other countries come from the US Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The university uses figures from many different sources, including the state health authorities and risk layers. However, it is often not known which sources the JHU is currently using. In terms of method, it is also not clear in all countries how the JHU proceeds.

  • A number alone is not enough to estimate the situation of the pandemic. To do this, all the numbers presented in this article must be included.
You will find an overview of the most important corona numbers in simple language and animated graphics in this overview.

  • Due to irregularities in the numbers of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), ZDFheute has decided to use data from Risklayer for the nationwide total number of corona cases, the number of new infections and the number of deaths. These depict the infection process in Germany better.

  • The day the new infections become known is not the day people became infected with the coronavirus. Reports are usually delayed: fewer cases become known on the weekend and more cases during the week. Because of this blurring, we usually report in our graphics about the average number of new infections over the past seven days - and not about new infections on a single day.

  • People in Germany have been vaccinated against Covid-19 since the end of December. This article provides an up-to-date overview of the number of registrations.

  • The reproduction value R indicates how many people an infected person infects on average. The RKI estimates this value - the actual amount can therefore vary slightly due to statistical uncertainties.
If the value is permanently above 1, the pandemic is on the advance. With the coronavirus "the goal is to keep the number of reproductions stable at below 1", according to the RKI. The 7-day value shown in the article shows the status of the infection from a week ago. According to the RKI, no reliable statement can be made for the days thereafter.
The R-value alone cannot be used to decide on new corona measures. For this purpose, other values such as the number of new infections, deaths or occupied intensive care beds must also be considered.

  • If you test more, you will also find more corona infections. That's why you don't have to worry about the increasing number of cases. This article explains whether that is true.

  • You can see the list of all risk areas of the Robert Koch Institute in this current article.
