The French language (langue francaise) is one of the most important in the world. 3.2% of the world's population speak and write the French language. French ranks 9th among the most widely spoken languages in the world. If you are on holiday in the south of France, however, depending on your travel destination, you can also use French dialects, such as the Provence or in the Pyrenees-Orientales region or in Languedoc and in the Basque Country, in addition to French, other languages such as Catalan or get to know Basque.
Around 80 million people are learning French, and Europe's youth in particular want to learn French more and more. Hindi and Chinese are far ahead of French in terms of numbers, but the language of Molière and Maupassant, along with English, is spoken on all continents of the world.
French language as a world language
Europe is home to around half (44%) of the world's French-speaking population. In addition to France, French is spoken mainly in Belgium (45% of the country's population), Switzerland (20% of the population) and Luxembourg. In the European Union countries, French ranks second with 71 million francophones (including the Swiss-speaking area), just behind German (90 million German-speaking) but ahead of English (61 million).
However, French is most widely spoken and used as a mother tongue in the black continent, Africa. For example, French is generally a majority language in North Africa: 64% in Tunisia, 57% in Algeria and 41.5% in Morocco speak French. The Arab world, where 1.5 million speak French in Lebanon alone, is an important linguistic region in the world of Francophonie and the French idiom. Almost 30 million French-speaking people live further south in Africa (1997), one third of them in equatorian West Africa, 29% in tropical Africa, a quarter in equatorian East Africa and 14% on the African coast (Sahel).
There is also a large Francophone community in North America. The largest French-speaking minority in the world lives in Canada. It is estimated that around 10 percent of Canada's 27.3 million citizens speak, write and learn French. Most French-speaking Canadians live in Canadian cities such as Quebec and Montréal, where they make up the majority of the population. Also further south in the Americas, nearly 300,000 people speak French in the United States, mostly in Louisiana and New Orleans. Furthermore, one can find many French-speaking people in the overseas departments of the Republic of France (Outre-Mer): In areas such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana and Haiti, where almost 8 million citizens are Francophone.
In Asia, most of the French speakers live in Indo-China. The number of French users in Vietnam is particularly large with around 375,000 Francophones. A quarter of the population in the Indian Ocean on islands such as La Réunion and Maritius speaks French, i.e. around 18 million people.
French is an institutional language
The French language is traditionally known not only as the language of culture, but has also been used as a language for business purposes and politics for a long time. French is one of the two official working languages at the UN and the International Olympic Committee, the only universal language of the General Postal Union and the main language of the African Union. French Language Day has been celebrated worldwide on March 20 since 1996 with many accompanying events.
In the mother country France, however, in addition to French, Basque, Breton, Provencal, Catalan, Alsatian and Occitan are used as independent languages alongside French by the inhabitants of the respective countries Regions spoken.
