The choice of the apprenticeship position influences your entire professional career. Because with your training you lay the foundation for your professional career. When choosing an apprenticeship occupation, there are a number of criteria that you can use to determine whether the occupation suits you or not. Can you live out your strengths in it? Would you enjoy the most important activities? Can you bring your interests and personal skills to bear in everyday working life? These and many other questions will help you to find the right apprenticeship position for you! But how do you actually know whether the training company also suits you? The decision for or against a certain company can be very important, after all, as a trainee, you will spend most of the day, for the next three years, in precisely this company. It is all the more important that you feel comfortable there.
There are clues that can be followed up before the start of the apprenticeship. Good research in advance is important for this. Unfortunately, there are also criteria that can only be checked after the apprenticeship has started. The question of whether a training company really suits you can only be answered on a very individual basis. What is a great training company for one person can be the exact opposite for another. Think for yourself what makes a good training company for you. The following criteria can help you!
7 criteria for a good training company
1. Good future prospects
An important criterion for recognizing a good training company is a high takeover rate of trainees. A training company puts a lot of time and effort into training an apprentice. So it makes sense to keep the self-formed specialist after the training. After all, they have been taught everything that is necessary to work in this particular company and profession. A training company that almost never takes on its trainees should make you puzzled. That could be an indication that the training company is dissatisfied with the quality of its own teaching and prefers to get experts from outside. There is no guarantee of a takeover anywhere, but you can find out if you can find information on the takeover rate of the individual training companies on the Internet. This gives you clues about your future prospects in a company after your apprenticeship.
2. A fair salary
As an apprentice, you make a valuable contribution to your company right from the start. This should therefore also be appropriately rewarded. You can recognize a good training company by the fact that your training remuneration does not fall below the collective bargaining provisions for your industry. A below-average pay can be an indication of a dubious training company in which you learn little but could do a lot of unqualified auxiliary work. But because you will do demanding work yourself as an apprentice, if initially only under supervision, then you will also earn a training allowance that corresponds to the collective bargaining provisions. You can find out how high your apprenticeship salary should be if you search the Internet for the collective agreements for your industry and your apprenticeship occupation.
3. The company philosophy
It is not only important that the choice of your future apprenticeship position is a good training company, but that it is a good training company for you. You can usually tell from the company philosophy whether your values and your worldview fit the company. You can find this on the company's homepage. Is the company primarily concerned with expanding its market leadership and always being at the top? Is the technological lead over the competition the ultimate goal? Or is environmental protection and the sustainable use of resources particularly important to the company? Read through the company philosophy for the companies that interest you as a potential employer. This gives you a good insight into what is very important in the company and what attitude is represented there.
4. The evaluations of other trainees
This point is a bit tricky. Sure, on the one hand, experience reports on the Internet can help you get a better picture of the daily work in a training company. On the other hand, some people use such rating platforms to vent their anger and, after an argument with the boss, for example, to spoil the entire training. It can be helpful to look at the reviews of other trainees on the Internet. But the greatest caution is always required! Feel free to read through a few reviews. You will probably find a lot of experience reports, especially for large companies. If these are consistently negative, this can also be an indication that training in this company is not advisable. If, on the other hand, you find almost only positive experience reports from former apprentices about a company, this means the green light and nothing should stand in the way of an application in this training company!
This is how you can tell whether you have chosen a good training company
The aforementioned criteria can be tested before the start of the training. You have to get to know the following points as to whether it is a good training company or not. This can be during an interview and a trial working day, or during the probationary period. At this early stage you can ask a lot of questions, but also change your training company relatively easily in an emergency.
5. The care
You can recognize a good training company by the fact that you receive individual support. You have an instructor assigned to you, and in the best case also another permanent contact person in the team or in your department. If you need help with a task or have questions about certain work processes, you can ask them to anyone. You will be supported when you run into difficulties, and most importantly, your trainer should be able to motivate you. If all of these things apply, you have done everything right when choosing the training company!
6. Versatile tasks
During your training you will get to know different departments, work on different projects and get to know all the facets of your apprenticeship. In a good apprenticeship, you will immediately learn how to answer the phone and talk to customers, how to write professional e-mails, and much more. It is not a good sign if you are first sent to the archive, where you destroy files and file documents for weeks. Your tasks should be varied and varied. But don't forget: only practice makes perfect! So if you do certain activities over and over again, that's perfectly normal! But you should learn something new at regular intervals.
7. Time for feedback
In a good training company, the trainer regularly takes time to give his apprentice feedback. How satisfied is the trainer with the learning progress? But the training plan is also discussed. As a trainee, you should be shown here what level you are currently at, whether you are well on schedule or whether you need longer for one or the other skill before you have learned it. Your trainer will look at your report book and talk to you about whether you are satisfied or would like more support in some areas. Such conversations are very important and therefore a good indication of whether or not you have ended up in a good training company!
