How can I get rid of astigmatism

Eye training

Depending on the visual impairment, different exercises can help improve eyesight. The offer for patients ranges from two-day seminars for around 200 euros, to paid and free online courses, to manuals for well-known eye trainers.

Eye training apps and free exercises

Numerous free exercise options for eye training can be found in the App Store or on the Internet. All kinds of relaxation exercises can be found here, which primarily reduce visual stress caused by the screen and promote the mobility of the eyes. Light relaxation exercises are not harmful and can be done without medical guidance, for example at home or at work.

However, if you have severe visual impairment that has existed since childhood, you should use the exercises with caution. Improper eye training can cause additional visual damage. For example, relaxation exercises close to the eyes can be extremely counterproductive for people with a lack of convergence. Which eye exercises help varies from person to person. Not every nearsighted person can do the same exercise program. Because every pair of eyes works differently. Experts therefore advise that the cause of vision problems should generally be clarified by a specialist.

With the help of detailed reports from an ophthalmologist, eye trainers can then determine which eye exercises suit your poor eyesight. Some eye trainers combine suitable visual exercises, for example with neurologically effective acupuncture or light therapy.

Standard exercises and palming

Resting the eyes in the meantime is very important in all vision training. This is achieved by "palming". You warm your hands by rubbing them a little and cover your eyes with the palm of your hand so that they are completely dark. This darkness is maintained until it is perceptible behind the closed lids. Then the photoreceptor cells also switch off and the eye relaxes.

A special variant of palming is eye sunbathing, looking into the sun with your eyes closed. The perception of the light effects is beneficial, say vision trainers. Their idea is to use heat to relieve illness. The American optometrist Jakob Liberman described this in detail in his works. However, you should never do the exercise in the blazing midday sun.

Eye yoga

In William Bates' eye training, many standard exercises have to do with motion sequences. For example, if you turn your head and upper body slightly from right to left, you relax and at the same time stimulate your blood circulation.

Another very well-known technique is eye yoga. The eyes are first slowly moved to the left and right, up and down and diagonally to the top right and bottom left and vice versa. You can do the exercise with your eyes open or closed and use your finger for better coordination. Eye yoga is supposed to strengthen the muscles and expand the field of vision.

Eye training with pinhole glasses and pinhole glasses

Anyone who puts on pinhole glasses or pinhole glasses looks through different circles and squares. These glasses are used as loosening aids and help when the eyes are staring. Normally, micro-movements of the eye muscles allow our eyes to relax. However, if you stare at text or a screen for a long time, this movement decreases. The eyes become heavy.

Pinhole and pinhole glasses stimulate the micro-movements again, because the eyes automatically move more when looking through the squares and circles. Beginners shouldn't put the glasses on for longer than three to four minutes. It is also important that you take a leisurely stroll around, let your gaze wander and consciously relax. You shouldn't put on pinhole or pinhole glasses more than five times a day.

Focus shift

During eye training, the accommodation and vergence of the eye is strengthened through conscious focusing. Accommodation is the ability to focus on objects. Vergence refers to the opposite rotational movements of the eyeballs, such as when squinting.

To train accommodation and vergence, all you need is one finger. If you hold it in front of your eyes at a distance of about 20 centimeters, you can do two exercises at the same time. During the first exercise, the focus is shifted alternately between the finger and the background. The eyes alternate between near and far vision. It is important that the nearsighted start with the finger, the farsighted in the distance.

In the second exercise, the focus remains on the finger. You lead it to your nose and back again without taking your eyes off your finger. The exercises ensure that the lens of the eye remains mobile for longer and does not harden as quickly. This does not prevent reading glasses, but they can be pushed out for a while.

Get rid of glasses through eye training?

Glasses off with eye training? It's not that easy after all. Even if you believe eye trainers and disregard the fact that the helping effect of the exercises has not been scientifically proven. Patients should never simply leave the glasses out, even with eye training. Experts even advise against parting with your vision aids too early. Because: Without glasses, the stress level for the eye muscles increases. It should actually be lowered through eye exercises. Even those who feel improved visual performance through the eye exercises will damage the eyes.
